Congressman Weldon has been a strong supporter of Armenia and Armenian community in the 7th District, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the United States. As the Member of the Congressional Armenian Caucus, he has issued statements commemorating the anniversary of the Armenian Genocide and the lessons learned from this tragedy. He has supported Congressional action on humanitarian aid and foreign aid. In his capacity as the Vice Chair of the House Armed Services Committee, Congressman Weldon pays close attention to the humanitarian, social and geopolitical developments in Armenia and the Caucuses Region.
US-Armenia relations have deep roots going back to the beginning of the 20th century, when large Armenian populations settled in the United States following the end of World War I. Armenia was one of the first nations to offer aid to the US war on terror following the September 11, 2001 attacks on US soil. Today, Armenia maintains a contingent of forces in Iraq. Curt Weldon maintains open dialogue with the Armenian-American constituents in our district, and his office is open to the visits by our constituents. Recent visits included trips made as part of the nation-wide awareness programs by the Armenian National Committee of America and the Armenian Assembly of America.
Recently, he signed the Congressional Members’ letter to President Bush asking the Administration to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1918. On April 26, 2006, he had the opportunity to address the Armenian-American community, as well as his fellow Members of Congress, at the 91st Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide, held on the Capitol Hill. Congressman Weldon reiterated the importance of US-Armenian bilateral ties, spoke of remembering the painful past and coming to terms with in it order to face the future for Armenian people and their neighbors in Turkey. He highlighted growing US-Armenian cooperation, stating that the United States wants good relationship with the countries in the Caucasus, but not at the expense of Armenia and her people.
